Cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and China

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Ukraine and China is aimed at implementation of artistic projects, educative campaigns and other forms of exchanges between Ukraine and China. Cooperation in the humanitarian field is one of the priority directions of bilateral relations.

The main mechanism of regulation, monitoring and control in this area is the Subcommision on Cooperation in the Cultural field. First and Second meetings of the Commission in the Cultural field took place in 2002 and 2009. The Parties signed Cooperation Plans for 2002-2006 and 2009-2012. According to these Plans the Days of Ukrainian Culture in China were held in 2002 and 2004, the Days of Chinese Culture in Ukraine were held in 2010 and 2011. On April 2011 the Commission has been replaced by the Subcommision on Cooperation in the Cultural field, created in the framework of the Ukrainian-Chinese Intergovermental Commission. First Subcommittee meeting was held in November 2011.

The 4th meeting of the Subcommision on Cooperation in the Cultural field took place in November 2017 in Beijing.

On December 5, 2017 in Kyiv the Program of cultural cooperation between the Ministry of culture of Ukraine and the Ministry of culture of the People's Republic of China for 2018-2022 was signed.

Embassy of Ukraine to the People’s Republic of China during 2017 organized a range of activities such as:

- cultural and artistic exhibitions (painting, drawing, etc.);

- round tables on topical issues regarding Ukraine;

- film screenings, lectures for students of Chinese Universities;

- presentation of famous Ukrainian bands of classical and popular music, including meetings with Chinese producers, negotiations between Ukrainian and Chinese art managers, artists, etc;

- celebration of festive events and memorial dates of Ukraine together with local government representatives and Ukrainian social activists.

A significant rise of the Chinese society interest in the Ukrainian culture promoted to organize a number of events: 

- flash mobs UnitedUkraine dedicated to the Day of Sobornist (Unification), “Global Shevchenko”, “Trident is Ukraine”, dictation on the Day of Ukrainian writing and language etc.;

- memorable events: the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor, the Day of struggle for the rights of the Crimean Tatar, the Day of Dignity and Freedom, etc.;

- a solemn events devoted to the Day of Defender of Ukraine, the Armed Forces Day of Ukraine, Day of State Flag of Ukraine, etc.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the first diplomatic mission of Ukraine to China a solemn event was organized on 22 December 2017. Lecture-presentation about the diplomatic presence of Ukraine in China, in particular, in 1918-1919 in Harbin, published in “Ukraine-China” edition was introduced to the guests.

In the framework of the 2nd International festival “Colorful Beijing”, the Embassy in cooperation with the Gallery of Ukrainian art in Beijing “Katiusha” organized the exhibition of modern Ukrainian paintings – images of women of Ukraine, which was awarded a prestigious prize for the “Best pavilion”.

In the context of the implementation of the Plan of cultural cooperation between Ukraine and China for 2013-2017, the Embassy assisted the representatives of the National Union of Photographers of Ukraine to participate in the 5th Beijing Photo Week-2017. More than one hundred artworks of Ukrainian photographers were presented during the Photo Week-2017. Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Union of Photographers of Ukraine and organizing Committee of the Beijing Photo Week was signed.

One of the most noticeable tendencies between two countries cultural cooperation is the growth of interest set in movie and TV production. Therefore, the Agreement on coproduction between Ukrainian company Film.ua and International Art business Alliance of China was signed on September 2017.

In the frame of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and China(January 4, 1992) Embassy is preparing a range of cultural and educational events during 2017, e.g. concert “Greetings from Ukraine” with famous Ukrainian cellist O.Piriyev in Tianjin Music Hall, exhibition of “Petrykivka – the soul of Ukraine” by H.Nazarenko and a series of master-class on Petrykivka painting, information project of China Radio International – “My second homeland”, art exhibition “New silk road – the famous Chinese artists and students”, a range of art events at the Art museum of Taras Shevchenko in Beijing etc.

On occasion of the 26th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence the Embassy of Ukraine organized an exhibition of Ukrainian artists’ artworks (H.Nazarenko, K.Biletina, K.Datsyuk, A.Didenko, I.Kaliuzhna), the photo exposition of “Ukraine – China friendship” project and mini show of Ukrainian folk performed by the team of Ukrainian community called U-Girls.

16-21 April, 2018 in the framework of the Beijing International Film Festival Ukraine’s delegetaion introduced to Chinese partners Ukrainian movie products, experience of Ukrainian specialists and prospects of cooperation with our coutry in the relevant field.

At the moment the ministries of culture of Ukraine and PRC are working on the issues regarding organization of the Days of Ukrainian culture in China which are to be hold in the second half of 2018.
