On March 25, 2016 in the framework of the 202nd anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birthday and 25th anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence a presentation of a new collection of Shevchenko’s poetry in Chinese translated by the famous literature connoisseur Ge Baoquan was held in the Embassy of Ukraine in the People’s Republic of China.
During the presentation an exhibition of the Great Kobzar’s paintings in graphic style was held.
Representatives of more than 10 educational institutions of China, Chinese Association of Friendship and Cooperation with Foreign Countries, National library of China, scholars and artists took part in the event.
Addressing the audience, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the People’s Republic of China Mr. Oleg Dyomin emphasized the uniqueness of the collection, which is the first edition of Ukrainian classic in China during the years of our country’s independence. In this context he stressed the importance of the Chinese initiative “One Belt, One Road” as a cultural bridge between China and other states, including Ukraine. The head of the mission expressed his gratitude to the Chinese partners for the realization of such an important cultural project for both states.
Presenting Taras Shevchenko’s collection, a famous Chinese scholar in Ukrainian studies, professor of Beijing University Mr. Lee Mingbing noted that the works of the genial Ukrainian poet are widely known in China both in the academic circles and in public at large. He stressed that although the first translation of Shevchenko’s works in China date back to more than a hundred yeas ago, the new poetry collection is basically the only one translated directly from the original language.
The event was widely covered by leading Chinese media, in particular, the Central television CCTV, China Radio International, news agency “Xinhua” and others.
