On 12 December 2019, during the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (9-14 December, Bogota, Colombia), the Ukrainian element entitled the “Tradition of Kosiv painted ceramics” was included to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The tradition of Kosiv handmade pottery – utensils, ceremonial items, toys and tiles – arose in the 18th century and has practical and artistic value. The main feature of this ceramics is the figurative language of the ornament, which is the expressive and meaningful accent of the work. The plot motif expresses history, life, folklore, beliefs and customs of the Hutsulshchyna – the historical name of the ethnographic area in the vicinity of the town of Kosiv.
The abovementioned positive for Ukraine decision was made by acclamation of all members of the Committee, including the Chinese delegation. On this occasion, the Embassy of Ukraine expresses its sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the PRC for supporting such an important initiative for Ukraine.
This event demonstrated that even in the era of globalization and rapid development of digital technologies, the task of preserving the elements of our country's intangible cultural heritage and recognizing it in the world cultural space remains a priority for Ukraine.
