On June 7, 2025, the Embassy of Ukraine in the People’s Republic of China hosted a special cultural diplomacy event: DNA UKRAINE: Varenyky Edition. At a time when Ukraine is fighting daily for its freedom and right to exist, such events are not only a presentation of national culture but also a vital act of preserving identity.
This event was part of a series of cultural master classes dedicated to Ukrainian heritage. On this occasion, it brought together food lovers, professional chefs, restaurant managers, and anyone eager to discover the taste of Ukraine.
Ambassador of Ukraine to China, Olexander Nechytaylo, delivered opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of deeper understanding of Ukraine, its ancient traditions, and rich cultural legacy — especially now, when this heritage is being deliberately attacked and destroyed by the aggressor. Cultural diplomacy during wartime is about preserving traditions, fostering mutual understanding among nations, and supporting one another.
A special highlight of the event was a live broadcast from Kyiv with renowned Ukrainian restaurateur Mykhaylo Katsurin, who spoke about modern Ukrainian cuisine as a powerful tool of cultural self-identification — a language of taste that resonates with the world across borders. He also expressed his deep appreciation for Eastern, particularly Chinese cuisine, stressing that mutual respect for culinary traditions builds bridges for intercultural dialogue even in times of adversity.
During the workshop, participants joined together to prepare over 1,000 varenyky with three traditional fillings:
• cherry dumplings with lemon cream sauce;
• cabbage dumplings served with pear cream sauce;
• potato and mushrooms dumplings served with onion cream.
Classic Ukrainian accompaniments were also served — sour cream, crispy pork cracklings with onions — which added a touch of authentic homemade flavor to the dishes.
The event “DNA Ukraine: Varenyky Edition” once again proved that Ukrainian cuisine is not just food. It is a story, a sense of family warmth, and a part of the nation’s DNA — something worth sharing with the entire world.
We sincerely thank the Ukrainian community in China for their active participation, inspiration, and support throughout every stage of planning and implementation. Thanks to your dedication and joint efforts, we were able to create an unforgettable atmosphere of unity and cultural dialogue.
